Media: Orban says he is stepping down as Fidesz party chairman

Hungary’s outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Tuesday that he is stepping down as Fidesz party chairman, but a decision on the proposal will be approved at the party congress in June, local media reported.

Party MP Erik Banks said a meeting of the Fidesz faction discussed how the leadership sees the reasons for the election defeat.

“Fidesz will vote for a new party leadership at a congress on 13 June.

As the Telex publication notes, Viktor Orban spoke at length with the press before the meeting, but did not do so afterwards, immediately getting into his car and leaving the venue.

The Tisza party, led by Peter Magyar, defeated Orban in the 12 April election, ending his 16-year rule and prompting introspection and calls for change in Fidesz.

In the 12 April election results, Fidesz, in coalition with the Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP), won 52 seats in the 199-seat parliament, with Orban’s party set to hold 44 seats in the National Assembly.
