US President Donald Trump is ready to sign a bill to impose new sanctions against Russia, provided that he retains the right to make the final decision on any restrictions. This is reported by Reuters, citing a senior White House official.
“It’s always been important to the White House and the president that there be a provision in the sanctions package that guarantees the president the right to make the final decision on sanctions. So if that is included, I think the president will consider signing the bill,” the spokesman said.
The White House spokesman also added that the US continues to negotiate with Russia to end the war.
A bipartisan bill to impose secondary sanctions against Russia, prepared by Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Richard Blumenthal, was introduced in the spring of 2025. The document calls for a 500% duty on imports from countries that continue to buy Russian oil, natural gas or uranium, as well as sanctions against any states that buy Russian uranium. More than 80 of 100 senators supported the initiative.
In October, Washington imposed sanctions against Russia’s largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil. These were the first restrictions against Moscow after Trump’s return to the White House. The US Treasury Department says the sanctions are already reducing Russia’s oil revenues and are likely to reduce Russian oil sales in the long term.
