Ministry of Economy forecasts biomethane production growth in 2026

Ukraine plans to increase biomethane production to about 150m cu.m. in 2026, and by 2030 the realistic target is the production level of 500m cu.m., this forecast was given by the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture following a meeting with the European Investment Bank

“Ukraine has a significant resource for the production of biomethane from agro-waste, livestock residues, straw and sugar beet, which meets European requirements for” green “fuel”, – the release on the ministry’s website quotes Deputy Minister Taras Vysotsky as saying.

He emphasised that the main driver of market development should be export to the EU. The deputy minister recalled that Ukrainian private producers in 2025 for the first time exported more than 11.2 million cubic metres of biomethane through the gas transport system of Ukraine.

Among the key challenges he named integration into the European certification system and creation of the necessary technical database.

As a result of the meeting, the parties agreed to continue coordination of work and further elaboration of priority areas of cooperation in the field of land reclamation, water resources management and development of sustainable agricultural infrastructure, as well as the biomethane industry.

As reported, on 23 April 2026, the government approved a programme for the development of biomethane production for the period until 2035, which envisages increasing its production to 2.1bn cu.m. in 10 years.

According to the “Operator of the Ukrainian GTS” (OGTSU), at the beginning of February 2026, the declared capacity of biomethane producers in Ukraine under the issued technical conditions for connection to the gas transport system was 11 thousand cubic metres per hour, which was equal to 96 thousand cubic metres per hour. M/h, which equalled 96 million cubic metres per year.
