Nawrocki thanked Trump who announced an increase in the US military presence in Poland

Polish President Karol Nawrocki thanked US President Donald Trump, who announced that the United States will send an additional five thousand troops to Poland.

“Good alliances are those based on co-operation, mutual respect and dedication to our common security. I thank United States President Donald Trump for his friendship with Poland and for his decisions, the practical consequences of which we see very clearly today,” he wrote on Portal X on the evening of 21 May.

Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States would send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland “based on the successful election of current Polish President Karol Nawrocki”.

Trump did not give details, and it is unclear whether the troops were part of a rotational deployment that the Pentagon had previously postponed.

On 20 May, the Pentagon announced that the US was reducing the total number of brigade combat teams deployed to Europe from four to three – a return to the levels of brigade combat teams in Europe in 2021. At the same time, the defence ministry said the decision would “temporarily delay” the deployment of United States forces to Poland, “which is an exemplary US ally”.

Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump announced plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany. The Pentagon later confirmed it was cancelling a planned rotational redeployment of about 4,000 military personnel to Poland and shelving plans to deploy a battalion of Tomahawk ground-launched cruise missiles to Germany.
