The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has reported an incident in an area 50 nautical miles south-east of the Yemeni city of Al-Shihir.
According to the agency, the captain of a tanker carrying petroleum products reported that a small boat (skiff) with five armed men on board was approaching. The men were likely attempting to board the vessel.
The tanker’s crew carried out evasive manoeuvres and altered course to break away from the skiff. The vessel is currently heading for its next port of call. According to preliminary information, the vessel and all crew members are safe.
The circumstances of the incident are being investigated by the relevant authorities. The UKMTO has urged vessels in the area to exercise increased caution and to report any suspicious activity.
