Due to the absence of a peace agreement, there is no talk now about the deployment of Czech military forces in Ukraine, Czech President Petr Pavel said during a joint press conference with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to the Czech leader, there are still “no specific talks” about which military forces and which countries could be stationed in Ukraine.
“It is difficult to say anything concrete about the mandate. It will be approved by the decisions of individual states, whom and in what quantity they will send,” Pavlo said.
He emphasised that Ukraine is an independent state that will grant permission to deploy foreign military on its territories when peace is achieved. Now Western partners can only discuss what kind of support, in what form they can give to Kiev, the Czech president specified.
“We have now talked about guarantees, which we can provide either politically or by a combination. I am convinced that a combination of guarantees – economic, political and military – will be a sufficient measure of security guarantees for Ukraine,” Pavel summarised.
Ukrainian legislation stipulates that the admission of units of the Armed Forces of other states to the territory of Ukraine is carried out on the basis of international treaties of Ukraine and in accordance with the procedure and under the conditions determined by the laws of Ukraine.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine will do everything to ensure that political decisions on the security contingent are implemented as quickly as possible, “when there is time for it”.
On 4 May, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, along with his wife Olena, arrived on an official visit to the Czech Republic, where he said they would talk about diplomatic efforts and joint pressure on Russia for a lasting ceasefire and an end to the war.
“Meetings are planned with President Petr Pavel and Prime Minister Petr Fiala, the chairmen of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate and leaders of parliamentary factions, as well as heads of defence companies, students and the Ukrainian community,” Zelensky wrote in a telegram.
