Australian cyclist Rohan Dennis has found himself at the centre of criticism after posting on social media amid the tragic death of his wife, also Olympic athlete Melissa Hoskins.
The reason was a short post: a photo of a black Porsche with the caption “real weapon”.
Those words sparked outrage and discussion around the world.
An off-road tragedy
Melissa Hoskins died in 2023 in an incident outside her Adelaide home.
According to the court’s version of events, there was a conflict between the couple over a kitchen renovation that day.
In the midst of the argument, Dennis got behind the wheel, intending to leave. Hoskins did not allow him to do so: first she climbed on the bonnet, and then held on to the door. At some point he fell under the wheels. The victim was hospitalised but sustained injuries
“It also shows a profound lack of respect for Melissa and her family who live with the aftermath of this tragedy every day,” the commissioner added in a statement.
The vehicle in the photo reportedly has nothing to do with the tragic incident.
Dennis also published other posts in the aftermath, calling his children “real weapons” and criticising journalists who sought comment.
The BBC has reached out to Dennis’ lawyer for comment.
Dennis and Hoskins married in 2018 with two children.
Dennis’ social media account has barely been updated since Melissa’s death. One of the most recent posts was a family photo by the Christmas tree less than a week before the tragedy.
Both athletes had outstanding accomplishments.
