A powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck in the Sea of Marmara near the western outskirts of Istanbul on Wednesday, officials said.
“A magnitude 6.2 earthquake has struck in Silivra, Sea of Marmara, Istanbul,” Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on social network X, adding that the tremors were felt in the surrounding provinces.
There were several other tremors following the first tremor at 12:49 p.m., Turkey’s disaster management agency AFAD said on social media X.

As buildings shook, people ran out into the streets, where crowds of worried people searched for information or made phone calls on their mobile phones, an AFP correspondent reported.
There were no reports of injuries or fatalities or building collapses in the 16-million-strong city, city officials said.
In February 2023, a powerful earthquake killed more than 50,000 people in Turkey and Syria.
