Significant political developments are unfolding on the international stage: Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a temporary halt to strikes on Kyiv from 5 to 8 September. This decision is linked to the visit to the Ukrainian capital by US President Donald Trump’s special representatives, Steve Whitcroft and Jared Kushner, who are planning to hold talks with the Ukrainian authorities.
However, despite Putin’s order, air raid alerts have already been sounded several times in Kyiv since the start of the day on 5 September, and it has emerged that two people were injured as a result of a night-time strike on the Kyiv region.
Interestingly, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also confirmed that Putin would be meeting Kushner and Whitcoff in Moscow on the same day. Upon the arrival of the American envoys in Russia, they were met by the Russian President’s special representative, Kirill Dmitriev, who will accompany the delegation to the Kremlin.
US President Donald Trump had previously hinted that his representatives were taking a certain ‘proposal to end the war’ to Russia and Ukraine, but the details remained under wraps. A visit to Kyiv is scheduled for 6 September, where the American envoys are due to meet with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Zelensky, for his part, promised to ensure the safety of the airspace for the negotiators and called on Russia to also refrain from attacks whilst the delegation is visiting. Nevertheless, Russian forces continued their attacks on 5 September, which Zelenskyy interpreted as a negative reaction to the Americans’ arrival. He stated that Ukraine intends to review its actions regarding Russian airspace.
Thus, US diplomatic efforts are aimed at finding ways to end the conflict; however, the situation remains tense and requires further monitoring.
