There has been an unexpected twist in the German political arena. ‘Alternative for Germany’ (AfD), a party that often provokes controversy and discontent in political circles, has achieved significant success for the first time in the state election in Saxony-Anhalt. According to exit polls conducted by the reputable media organisation ARD, 44.4 per cent of voters cast their ballots for the AfD. This is a huge leap forward, particularly given that their main rival, the traditionally strong CDU/CSU bloc led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, received only 18.4 per cent of the vote.
The other parties that cleared the five per cent threshold garnered no more than ten per cent, which once again underlines the phenomenal success of the ‘Alternative’. Thanks to voter support, the AfD has, according to preliminary figures, secured 39 of the 83 seats in the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament, but it still fell three seats short of an absolute majority.
The catch is that, without this majority, the AfD will need to form a coalition to govern effectively. This could prove a real headache, given that Germany’s leading parties have agreed to avoid cooperating with the AfD due to its far-right views.
Despite this hurdle, the party’s co-chair, Alice Weidel, confidently stated that her party had received a ‘clear mandate to form a government’. This statement could serve as a starting point for further political manoeuvring.
The election in Saxony-Anhalt also saw a record-high turnout of 76.5 per cent, the highest figure since 1990. This fact indicates that the political situation in the region has sparked unprecedented interest among voters.
‘Alternative for Germany’ is known for its criticism of the country’s current migration policy and its calls for stricter educational standards. The party also opposes Germany’s support for Ukraine and advocates closer ties with Russia, which has led some experts to suspect it may have links to the Kremlin.
This political success for the AfD could mark the beginning of new changes in German politics, and although many of the party’s initiatives are controversial, its influence is clearly growing. Will the AfD be able to maintain its position and realise its ambitious plans? Only time will tell.
