A Russian drone entered Romanian airspace during an attack on Ukraine on the night of April 17, the country’s Defence Ministry said on Friday.
The country’s National Military Command Centre notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations to alert the population in the northern part of Tulcea county, it said.
Romania’s air defence systems detected two aerial targets that emerged in the border area. One of them entered Romanian airspace, but radar contact with it was lost 16 kilometres southeast of the commune of Chilia Veke, over a deserted area.
“A team from the Ministry of National Defence is ready to depart this morning on an exploratory mission in the area. We strongly condemn the actions of Russian Federation, which jeopardise regional security and are a serious violation of international law”, the department said in a statement.
The Defence Ministry added that it was coordinating with the responsible allied and national services and was ready to take the necessary measures to protect Romania’s territory and population.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the Russian army launched an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 172 attack drones at Ukraine overnight. The launches were carried out from Russian regions and occupied Crimea, 147 drones were neutralized by anti-aircraft defence.
