Rubio: U.S. discusses possible options to pressure Georgian authorities

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, commenting for the first time on the situation in Georgia after the new administration headed by Donald Trump came to power, said that various measures against the Georgian authorities were being discussed in Washington.

He said this on 21 May, responding to a question from House of Representatives member Joe Wilson, who is a vocal critic of the Georgian Dream government and used the term “anti-American government” in relation to the current Georgian leadership.

“The goal of the United States is to adhere to our national interests, so we ask ourselves: is it in our interest to have an anti-American government in an important region of the world? If not-we will take appropriate action to ensure that this government incurs costs. That is being considered, and we are looking for possible measures and additional options. I don’t have specific statements today about what steps we plan to take, but I can tell you it’s a subject of discussion,” Rubio said.
