Russia and North Korea have taken an important step towards strengthening their cooperation by opening a road link across the Tumen River via a new bridge. This infrastructure project promises to have a significant impact on economic ties between the two countries, facilitating the faster and more convenient movement of goods and people.
The official opening took place via video conference, attended by high-ranking officials from both countries. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and his North Korean counterpart Pak Thae Song emphasised the significance of this event for the development of bilateral relations.
The first road bridge across the Tuman River, approximately one kilometre long, has two lanes and is the first structure of its kind between Russia and the DPRK. Until now, the countries had been linked only by a railway line running across the Friendship Bridge. The new bridge will become a vital link in the region’s transport infrastructure, enabling a significant increase in transport volumes.
Construction of the bridge began on 30 April 2025, a year after the agreement was signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang. The bridge has been named in honour of Yakov Novichenko, a Red Army officer who, in 1946, saved the life of North Korean leader Kim Il-sung by shielding him with his own body from a grenade explosion. This heroic act ensured that Novichenko’s name would be forever enshrined in the history of the DPRK, where he was awarded the title of Hero of Labour.
The opening of the bridge demonstrates the two countries’ desire to develop economic cooperation and strengthen political ties in the face of contemporary challenges. It now remains to be seen how the new transport corridor will affect trade relations between Russia and North Korea.
