Google is enhancing the capabilities of Google Photos using artificial intelligence. The Virtual Wardrobe feature is being rolled out more widely across the app; it creates a digital wardrobe based on the user’s photos. The AI analyses the photos, identifies the clothes the user already owns, and organises them into a separate collection.
Users can then browse their items and mix and match them to create new outfits. In effect, Google Photos is becoming a sort of digital stylist. The feature can also suggest clothing options that users can try on virtually using AI.
Another new feature is Manual Photo Stacks. This allows you to manually group several photos together. For example, you can select a series of similar photos and create a single stack from them, so that the main Google Photos feed is less cluttered. This feature was previously available on the iPhone and is now starting to roll out on Android.
To create a stack, simply select several photos, open the bottom toolbar and tap ‘Stack photos’. After that, all the selected photos will be combined into a single group, which you can open and view separately. The feature is currently being rolled out gradually, so it may not be available on all smartphones straight away.
These new features show that Google is gradually transforming Photos not just into a photo storage service, but also into a smart tool for managing your photos. The virtual wardrobe will come in handy for those who often find themselves unsure of what to wear, whilst manual stacks will help you organise a large photo library more effectively.
