Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Washington has cancelled another round of consultations with the Russian side to remove “irritants” in bilateral diplomatic relations.
“We hope that the pause they have taken will not be too long,” Zakharova said. When and where the cancelled meeting was to take place was not specified.
The US administration has not yet commented on the announcement.
On 10 June, the new Russian ambassador to Washington, Alexander Darchiev, said that a new round of Russia-US talks would be held “in the near future in Moscow.”
On 27 February and 10 April, talks were held in Istanbul, including talks on normalising the work of the Russian and US embassies.
Contacts between the countries intensified after the change of the US administration and the return of Republican President Donald Trump to the White House.
