A political storm is brewing in the US over President Donald Trump’s decision to authorise the import of Russian diesel fuel. Senators from both parties believe that this decision not only runs counter to the spirit of the law but also jeopardises national security. In their statement, they point out that in 2022, Congress banned the import of Russian energy resources to prevent American money from being used to fund Russia’s military operations in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, without consulting Congress, the Trump administration has issued a licence to import diesel from Russia until April 2027. This has caused outrage not only amongst politicians but also on the international stage. Ukraine strongly condemned Washington’s decision, calling it a ‘sign of weakness’ and a ‘gift’ to Vladimir Putin, whilst the EU has warned that easing pressure on Moscow is unacceptable.
The situation has been further exacerbated by a sharp rise in fuel prices, which began following the military operation in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This is causing discontent amongst American voters, which could have a negative impact on the Republican Party’s popularity in the run-up to the November mid-term congressional elections.
Against the backdrop of such pressing political and economic issues, the conversation between Trump and Putin – which culminated in the signing of an agreement on diesel fuel supplies – appears to be adding fuel to the fire. It seems that in the near future we are set to witness even fiercer political battles in Washington.
