Sweden allocates military aid package to Ukraine worth about 1.2 billion euros

The Swedish government is allocating “one of the largest” military aid packages to Ukraine, its press service said on 19 February.

The 21-I support package, estimated to be worth 12.9 billion Swedish kronor (about 1.2 billion euros), is aimed at meeting Ukraine’s “most critical needs”. It largely consists of newly manufactured air defence equipment, long-range weapon systems and ammunition.

“The package also includes innovative projects aimed at finding new solutions to Ukraine’s military challenges, funding for Sweden’s participation in bilateral and multilateral training initiatives, and funds for the delivery of previously transferred materials,” the report said.

In particular, the largest item in the support package is Sweden’s initiative to “support Ukraine with advanced short-range air defence equipment” worth about 402 million euros.

“This air defence system is designed modularly and includes gun and missile systems, interceptors, electronic warfare systems, active and passive sensors, as well as command and control systems. The system is designed to defend large areas against air threats,” the statement said.

The system can be used to protect “particularly important” military or civilian infrastructure such as deployment areas, ports, power plants or residential areas.

The package also includes ammunition, including artillery shells, 40mm ammunition for air defence and 12mm ammunition for grenade launchers.

Also in 2026, the Swedish Armed Forces will continue to participate in bilateral and multilateral training to improve Ukraine’s defence capabilities.

Stockholm plans to continue to participate in international funds to assist Ukraine, including the PURL initiative to purchase U.S. weapons for Ukraine.

Sweden has been providing military and humanitarian support to Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Stockholm estimates the total amount of aid provided to Ukraine at 130 billion Swedish kronor.
