The International Weightlifting Federation has allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in all age groups, the organisation announced on 26 June.
The statement notes that the decision was taken in light of recent recommendations from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the provision of equal opportunities for athletes to participate in international competitions. There is no mention of any restrictions on the athletes.
Earlier this year, restrictions on the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in weightlifting competitions for cadets and juniors were lifted.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russian and Belarusian athletes in most sports were, in accordance with the IOC’s recommendations, only permitted to compete under a neutral status.
Between April and June 2026, the International Fencing Federation (FIE), World Aquatics and World Gymnastics allowed Russian and Belarusian participants to compete without restrictions, with their national anthems and flags. These decisions were criticised in Ukraine and a number of European countries.
