US President Donald Trump has said the government will pay most citizens a “dividend” of at least $2,000 each.
“Everyone will be paid a dividend of at least $2,000 (except high income earners!),” he wrote in Truth Social.
But he did not specify a timeline for fulfilling his promise or what level of income would be considered high income.
In his post, Trump praised the US economy, saying the tariffs would bring in “trillions of dollars” that could soon be used to start paying off the country’s massive debt.
“People who are against tariffs are fools!” he wrote, saying the United States is “the richest and most respected country in the world” with “almost no inflation and a record stock market price.”
The USA government shutdown is now in its 40th day, already the longest in the country’s history.
The previous record was set in early 2019, during Donald Trump’s first term. Then the shutdown lasted 34 days and 21 hours.
Congress cannot agree on funding the government, as Democrats insist on extending tax breaks for health insurance and allocating funds for preferential healthcare programmes. Republicans refuse to support these demands.
