US President Donald Trump has thanked the Secret Service and law enforcement for their quick response after an armed man opened fire outside the White House.
Trump said the gunman had a “violent past and perhaps an obsession with the nation’s most valuable building”.
“An armed man is dead after an exchange of gunfire with Secret Service agents at the gates of the White House. This event comes a month after the shooting at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner,” he wrote on social media.
On the evening of 23 May, an armed man opened fire outside the White House and US Secret Service agents returned fire, hitting the suspect, who was taken to a local hospital where he died. One passerby was also wounded during the shooting.
No Secret Service personnel were injured.
This comes a month after shots rang out during the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner at the Hilton Hotel in Washington, DC. United States President Donald Trump was due to speak at the event.
