US officially eases sanctions against Belinvestbank and fertiliser companies in Belarus

The United States confirmed the lifting of sanctions against several Belarusian companies – the relevant decision was published by the Ministry of Finance of the country on 26 March.

The U.S. government issued a general licence, which allows transactions involving the state-owned Belinvestbank and its affiliates.

In addition, Belaruskali was excluded from the sanctions list:

  • “Belaruskali”
  • “Belarusian Potash Company (BPC)
  • “Agrorastvor (a subsidiary of BPC in Ukraine).

The restrictions imposed on the Ministry of Finance of Belarus and the Development Bank have also been lifted.

The U.S. first imposed sanctions against Belinvestbank in 2022 because of Belarus’ support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

March 19, it became known that the U.S. lifted sanctions on two Belarusian banks and the Ministry of Finance, as well as the potash industry. The same day, the Belarusian service of Radio Liberty reported that 250 political prisoners had been released after a meeting between Alexander Lukashenko and U.S. Special Envoy for Belarus John Cole. It is known that 15 of them were taken out of the country, while 235 will remain in Belarus.
