US postponed imposing duties on chip imports from China

The US will impose duties on chip imports from China due to Beijing’s “unreasonable” attempts to ensure its dominance in the semiconductor industry, the administration of US President Donald Trump said. The size of the duties will be announced at least 30 days before their implementation, which has been delayed until June 2027.

China’s aiming to dominate the semiconductor industry is unreasonable and burdens or restricts U.S. trade, and therefore provides a basis for action,” U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer said in a release.

U.S. authorities have been examining Chinese chip imports for a year for unfair trade practices and have concluded that China has been using them.

Beijing can use its control of the global semiconductor industry to economically coerce other countries, the trade envoy said in a release.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry responded by criticising the US for abusing the duties and suppressing industries in the Chinese economy.

Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said the U.S. approach hurts not only global supply chains but also Americans themselves.

If the US continues to do things its own way, China will resolutely take appropriate measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests,” the Financial Times quoted him as saying.
