US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced in a post on social network x that the process of closing the US Agency for International Development (USAID) has begun.
According to the US official, “a number of key programmes” have already been transferred to the State Department, and Russell Vaught, director of the US Office of Management and Budget, has been appointed to lead the liquidation process.
“I joked with the president that I have four jobs. He said, Give one to my friend Ross. So that’s what I did. Since January, we’ve saved taxpayers tens of billions of dollars. Now Ross is leading the charge to shut down an agency that has long been out of – control,” Rubio wrote.
Earlier, Rubio announced the termination of all foreign aid by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as of 1 July.
USAID was founded in 1961. In 2025, its budget was supposed to be $42.8 billion. But President Donald Trump froze all foreign aid to the agency for 90 days in January, after which USAID was placed under the control of the US State Department.
