Vatican unveils list of world leaders who will attend pope’s inauguration

The Vatican has released a list of world leaders who will attend the inaugural Mass of newly elected Pope Leo XIV on Sunday, 18 May, Reuters reported.

The journalists said that from the United States will be Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The Vatican is also expecting the presence of German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou. From Italy-President Sergio Mattarella and Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Maloni.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will represent the European Union at the inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV.

Sky News writes that Russian Federation will be represented by Culture Minister Olga Lyubimova.

Pope Leo XIV, in his first Sunday blessing on 11 May, remembered countries suffering from war and called for “a real peace as soon as possible” in Ukraine.

The conclave elected a new pope on 8 May. He was Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who hails from Chicago, USA.

Pope Francis was buried on 26 April in the Roman Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. He died on 21 April at the age of 88 after suffering a stroke.
