Zelensky on talks with Trump: ‘symbolic meeting that has the potential to become historic’

Vladimir Zelensky commented on his meeting with American leader Donald Trump, which took place in the Vatican on 26 April, where both presidents arrived at the funeral of Pope Francis.

“It was a good meeting. One-on-one had time to discuss many things. We hope for a result from all the things that were voiced. The protection of our people’s lives. A complete and unconditional ceasefire. A secure and lasting peace that will safeguard against a repeat of the war. A very symbolic meeting that has the potential to become historic if we achieve common results,” Zelensky wrote in a telegram, thanking Trump.

Earlier, the speaker of the Ukrainian President Sergey Nikiforov said that the presidents of Ukraine and the United States had a meeting in the Vatican.

According to him, the teams of Ukrainian and US presidents Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump are working to organise the continuation of the meeting.

“The presidents met in St Peter’s Basilica, the meeting lasted about 15 minutes. The leaders agreed to continue talks today. The teams are working to organise a continuation of the meeting,” the speaker said.

The White House said the talks were “very productive” and promised more details later.

The head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak called the meeting constructive.

Zelensky and Trump have not met in person since a dispute between them at the White House in February.

US President Donald Trump says his administration is seeking an early ceasefire in Ukraine and a peace agreement and is negotiating with both Russia and Ukraine to do so.
