At least five people have been killed and 130 injured after a tornado ripped through the municipality of Rio Bonito in southern Brazil. 30 victims are in critical condition.
According to local authorities, the tornado that hit the area on the afternoon of November 7 had a grade of F3 on the six-point Fujita scale (F0 to F5), meaning wind speeds exceeded 250 kilometres per hour. The tornado developed after several days of torrential rain and hail.
The city of Rio Bonito, with a population of 14,000, was the hardest hit. Emergency services estimate that about 80 per cent of buildings have been destroyed or damaged.
Photos and videos posted by residents on social media show torn roofs, overturned cars and broken trees.
