In Germany, a 33-year-old Ukrainian national has been arrested on suspicion of espionage with the aim of sabotage, following a request from the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office, according to the Bavarian police.
“According to the investigation, there are strong grounds for suspecting that the accused, acting as a so-called ‘low-level agent’ on behalf of a foreign intelligence service, made recordings on the premises of a Bavarian arms manufacturer in June 2026 as part of preparations for sabotage operations and passed them on to a client,” the statement said.
The police noted that the Ukrainian national was detained on 2 August, and the following day the Munich Regional Court issued an arrest warrant for him.
The police have not provided any further details, in particular regarding which country’s intelligence service is involved.
The suspect’s name has not been disclosed either, and his current whereabouts are unknown.
There have been repeated reports in Germany of arrests on suspicion of spying for Russia. For example, in March, a Ukrainian citizen, Vitaliy M., was detained in Germany on suspicion of collaborating with a foreign intelligence service.
And in June 2024, three individuals were detained on suspicion of spying on a Ukrainian citizen. Those detained are citizens of Ukraine, Russia and Armenia. They are suspected of collaborating with a foreign intelligence service.
