China said on Tuesday it supports “all efforts” for peace between Russia and Ukraine following reports of a likely meeting between Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and Russian leader Vladimir Putin
“China always believes that dialogue and negotiation is the only solution to the crisis in Ukraine. We support all efforts that promote peace,” the country’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said.
Beijing also reacted to US President Donald Trump’s meeting with Putin by making a similar statement regarding support for all peace efforts.
“It is good to see that Russia and the US are engaging, improving ties and promoting the process of political settlement of the crisis,” the Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman said.
Beijing has previously said it supports “direct dialogue and negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, as well as a political solution to the crisis.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Washington on 18 August, where he met with US President Donald Trump. There was also a meeting between Trump and Zelensky with the participation of key European allies. The topic of the talks was ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.
On 15 August, talks between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump were held in Alaska. The main topic of the meeting was also the end of Russia’s war against Ukraine, but no specific agreements were reported at the end of the meeting.
