Iranian and Azerbaijani special forces conduct joint military exercises on the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.
The Aras-2025 exercise will last until 21 May.
IRNA reports that units of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have been involved in the exercise from the Iranian side. “This is an important step in enhancing the security of the border zone and confronting potential threats,” said a spokesman for the quir, Brigadier General Uali Madani.
In April, Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian visited Baku and held talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. “Iran will make every effort to make relations between our two countries reach a strategic level in all fields,” he said.
Azerbaijan is a close partner of Israel, which has caused tensions with Iran. Relations between Baku and Tehran have recently escalated. In particular, mutual discontent has been caused by the fact that both countries have conducted military exercises near each other’s borders.
In January 2023, an armed attack with a Kalashnikov assault on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran killed an embassy employee and injured two others. After that the diplomats were evacuated to Azerbaijan. According to Radio Azadliq, the work of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran resumed in July 2024.
