Azerbaijan is planning to build a 300 MW thermal power station in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR), the country’s President Ilham Aliyev has announced.
“(11 August – IF) The foundation stone was laid for a 300-megawatt thermal power station. I should point out that Nakhchivan’s current generating capacity stands at around 200 megawatts. (…) Of course, this power station has two objectives: the first is to provide the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic with a constant supply of energy, and the second is the issue of exports,” Aliyev said in an interview with the Azerbaijani state television channel AzTV.
He added that the construction of the thermal power station would form part of the project to establish the Nakhchivan Industrial Park, the foundation stone for which was also laid last Tuesday.
Aliyev stated that numerous hydroelectric and solar power stations, as well as a modular power station, have already been built in the NAR. Private investors are currently building two solar power stations with a combined capacity of 50 MW. In addition, there are plans to build a hydroelectric power station with a capacity of just over 15 MW in the Ordubad district.
