In Colombia, rescue workers are continuing to search for survivors beneath the rubble – almost three days after the devastating earthquake that struck on 10 August.
According to local authorities, the strongest earthquake to hit Colombia this century has claimed the lives of 265 people, left more than 3,500 injured, and left nearly 500 missing.
According to official figures, more than 11,000 homes have been destroyed, leaving thousands of families homeless.
According to the US Geological Survey, the 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 107 kilometres near San José del Palmar in Chocó, a sparsely populated province on Colombia’s Pacific coast. The tremors were felt in the country’s major cities.
Earlier this summer, on 24 June, two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in Venezuela claimed the lives of more than 6,000 people and caused significant damage.
