Britain: Charles III reacts to the arrest of his brother, former Prince Andrew

Britain’s King Charles III has reacted to the arrest of his brother, former Prince Andrew, saying the case should receive a full and fair hearing.

In a statement, Charles II emphasised that “the law must be upheld”.

“There must now be a full, fair and proper process in which this matter will be investigated appropriately and by the appropriate authorities. In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation,” Charles III said, quoted by the BBC.

At the same time, Charles III said he would refrain from further comment while the process is underway.

19 Feb Britain arrested former Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

BBC special correspondent Lucy Manning reports that the detention relates to documents from the former prince’s time as trade representative that were allegedly given to Epstein.

The BBC notes, however, that this arrest should not be taken as evidence of guilt, and no charges have yet been laid.

In October last year, Prince Andrew renounced his title – in particular, the title of Duke of York and the title of Knight of the Order of the Garter.

This came amid a scandal with financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was accused of organising sex parties for the elite of Western countries.

2021 YEARS AGO, American Virginia Giuffre filed a lawsuit against the prince for sexualised abuse. She claimed to have had sex with him when she was a minor. She was allegedly “lent” to Prince by Epstein. Giuffré died in April 2025 at the age of 41.

The prince has denied the allegations but has ceased acting as a member of the royal family and relinquished eight honourable military titles.
