Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is proposing to dissolve Parliament and call an early election for 28 April.

“I have just asked the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and call a federal election for 28 April. We need to build the strongest economy in the G7. We need to deal with President Trump’s tariffs.Canadians deserve a choice about who should lead this effort for our country,” he wrote on social media X.

Mark Carney, 59, was sworn in as Canada’s prime minister on 14 March. It was then expected that Carney could call an early election in Canada within the next fortnight.

Mark Carney-an economist who headed the Bank of Canada from 2008-2013 during the financial crisis. He was also later chairman of the Bank of England and Trudeau’s economic adviser, but has recently criticised him for what he sees as the prime minister’s too frequent distractions in that area.
