Dozens of people have been injured in clashes between government opponents and supporters in Serbia.
According to Radio Liberty’s Balkan service, the main clashes on Wednesday evening took place in Novi Sad and the capital Belgrade, particularly near the parliament building.
Anti-government “Serbia, wake up” rallies were held in dozens of cities. In Novi Sad, the second most populous city, dozens of people were injured in clashes outside the office of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party.
President Aleksandar Vucic said peace on the streets had been preserved “by some miracle”, he was quoted as saying by the RTS channel.
Vucic told a news conference that 16 police officers were injured during the protests, with two seriously wounded. At least 64 people were injured in Novi Sad, he said. He blamed anti-government protesters for the violence and said the situation was close to the start of a “Civil War”.
Serbia has been witnessing massive student protests since November 2024. Demonstrators block universities across the country and demand early elections of the Serbian president.
