Ex-deputy Russian defence minister sentenced to 13 years in prison

On 1 July, the Moscow City Court sentenced former Russian Deputy Defence Minister Timur Ivanov to 13 years in a general regime colony on charges of embezzlement and money laundering.

The court also sentenced Ivanov to a fine of 100 million rubles. In addition, he was deprived of state awards.

The second defendant in the case, former head of Oboronlogistics Anton Filatov, was sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison with a fine.

Ivanov’s defence told Russia’s Interfax news agency that it disagreed with the court’s ruling and would appeal against it.

The Russian edition of RBC notes that the verdict found the defendants guilty of embezzling 216.6 million roubles in the purchase of ferries for the Kerch crossing, as well as of embezzling and laundering 3.9 billion roubles previously belonging to the bankrupt Interkommerts bank.

As an additional measure of punishment, the court granted the prosecutor’s office’s request to confiscate the property of the former Russian deputy minister worth more than 2.5 billion roubles, including land plots on Rublevskoye Highway, a car fleet and funds in bank accounts.

Consideration of the case began in March. Both defendants did not admit their guilt. At the previous hearing, representatives of the prosecutor’s office asked for fourteen and a half years of colony for 49-year-old Timur Ivanov, and 14 years for his former subordinate Filatov.

Timur Ivanov has been in custody since April 2024. He is also on trial for two episodes of bribery on a particularly large scale. A decision on them has not yet been made.
