A survey by the US-based Pew Research Centre shows that people around the world now view China more favourably than the US.
According to its data, in more than 20 of the 36 countries that took part in the survey, residents view China more favourably than the US. These countries include Pakistan, Turkey, Italy, Greece, South Africa, Canada and France.
In six countries – Poland, the Philippines, South Korea, India, Japan and Israel – more people view the US more favourably.
“This is the first time, in the roughly 20 years that we have been conducting such surveys, that China has been viewed more positively than the US,” writes The Guardian, citing Laura Silver, a senior representative at the think tank.
Respondents in 36 countries were also asked which leader – Chinese President Xi Jinping or US President Donald Trump – they trusted more. In most countries, trust in the Chinese leader is higher than in Trump. In six countries, they are viewed equally, whilst in eight, Trump is trusted more.
More than 42,000 people took part in the survey.
