A major scandal has erupted in Romania following the arrest of a former presidential candidate, 64-year-old Kelin Georgescu. His name has once again made the headlines following searches carried out by the police and officials from the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) in several cities, including Bucharest. This investigation concerns allegations of forming an organised criminal group and large-scale fraud.
Investigators claim that Georgescu was involved in a fraud scheme designed to mislead businesspeople with promises of substantial funding from foreign banks. One of the entrepreneurs fell victim to the scam, losing over one million euros in the hope of securing a loan of six million. After being lured by promises to double the loan amount, he transferred a further 100,000 euros, but the promised funds never materialised.
Interestingly, the case has an international dimension. Among the suspects, apart from Georgescu, were two Romanian nationals and one Italian national. Furthermore, the investigation revealed possible financial links to Russia, which added an extra layer of intrigue to the case.
Whilst Georgescu has remained silent regarding the charges against him, his supporters have already gathered outside the DIICOT offices to stage a protest in his support. Public opinion is divided: some consider him a victim of political manoeuvring, whilst others are convinced of his guilt.
It is worth recalling that in November 2024, Georgescu caused a sensation when he unexpectedly won the first round of the presidential election. However, his triumph was overshadowed by allegations of Russian interference and unclear funding. The authorities annulled the results, and Georgescu found himself under close scrutiny by law enforcement agencies; he was also barred from standing in subsequent elections.
Following this political fiasco, in May 2025, Georgescu announced his retirement from politics, but it appears he was unable to step away from public life entirely. He now faces a serious legal case, and his fate remains very much in doubt.
