Tens of thousands of workers in Germany’s automotive industry are taking part in protests calling on the authorities and company management to safeguard jobs, The Guardian reported on Monday.
Workers from Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and a number of other manufacturers are taking part in the protests.
Volkswagen had previously announced plans to cut 100,000 jobs over the next three years. BMW and Mercedes are also reducing their workforce.
The protesters are calling on the authorities to support the sector, in particular through subsidies.
The Guardian notes that the crisis in the German car industry is linked, in particular, to the growth of the Chinese electric vehicle sector, with Chinese models being cheaper and often equipped with more advanced features than their German counterparts.
