Robert Mueller, the former special prosecutor who led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, has died in the United States. He was 81 years old.
The death was announced by Mueller’s family. The statement said he died Friday night, and loved ones asked that their privacy be respected.
After news of Mueller’s death emerged, US President Donald Trump had the following reaction on his social media network Truth Social: “okay, I’m glad he’s dead,” adding that “he can no longer harm innocent people.”
Mueller also headed the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2001-2013. He was appointed special prosecutor in 2017 to investigate Moscow’s possible interference in the election that Donald Trump won.
In the final 2019 report, Mueller’s team concluded that Russia interfered in the election process in an attempt to influence voters in favour of Trump’s campaign.
The investigation and Mueller himself have been repeatedly criticised by Trump, who called it a “witch hunt” and a “hoax”.
