German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will travel to Washington to meet US President Donald Trump next week.
The 69-year-old conservative, who became German chancellor on 6 May, will meet the American leader at the White House on 5 June.
According to government spokesman Stefan Cornelius, among the topics of the meeting will be Russia’s war against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East and trade policy.
This will be the first meeting of the two leaders and Merz’s first official visit as chancellor.
According to Bloomberg, the timing and format of Merz’s visit are the result of weeks of negotiations between the White House and Berlin. Merz will stay overnight at Blair House, the president’s guest house. The two leaders plan to hold a press conference at the White House on Thursday after a joint dinner before Merz flies back to Berlin.
