It looks like Google has finally decided to get serious about its Tensor processors and make them truly competitive. An interesting document from the RISC-V Day conference in Tokyo has surfaced, and it hints that Google no longer plans to use the Mali graphics it used to put in its chips.
To be honest, this has been long overdue, because it was through Mali that Tensor processors were noticeably inferior to the same Snapdragon. And now it looks like the Tensor G5 will have graphics from Imagination Technologies, the same company as PowerVR. They say they’ll have a pretty powerful DXT-48-1536 GPU, with support for modern chips like ray tracing. And that’s really cool, because even the Tensor G4 doesn’t have that.
Another interesting news is that Google may abandon its partnership with Samsung and switch to TSMC to produce new chips using the advanced 3nm process. If all this is true, we will see the first such chip already in the Pixel 10, the design of which has already been shown by insiders. In short, Google seems to finally want to make its Tensor really top-of-the-line.
