US commander of the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland Suzanne Meyers has been fired because of a “loss of confidence in her ability to govern”.
“Actions that seek to undermine the chain of command or undermine President Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated at the Department of Defence,” Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell wrote on social media X on Thursday announcing Suzanne Meyers’ dismissal.
Parnell posted a message Space Operations Command Meyers was removed “due to a loss of confidence in her ability to lead.”
Following Vance’s visit to the island in late March, Military.com reported that Meyers had sent an email to the base that, among other things, dismissed criticism of Denmark and its oversight of the territory.
Parnell published a link to the Military.com article in his post.
United States Vice President J.D. Vance flew to Greenland for a visit on 28 March.
At the US military base Pituffik, Vance and his wife Usha had lunch with military personnel. Afterwards, the vice president gave a speech in which he emphasised Greenland’s strategic importance to US security in the Arctic region.
Vance said, among other things, that Denmark is not capable of providing security in the Arctic the way the U.S. can and allegedly does not invest enough in the welfare of the island’s inhabitants. He said the states would be happy to take control of Greenland.
Asked by a journalist whether the US plans to use military force to do so, the vice president said he hoped it would not have to be done.
