Budapest officially regards Russia as a threat to Hungary, Europe and the ‘global order’ – this is stated in the government guidelines for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, signed by Prime Minister Péter Magyar and published in the Hungarian government gazette Magyar Közlöny. The UN General Assembly session is due to take place in September.
According to the text, Hungary condemns Russian military aggression, supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders, and recognises Ukraine’s right to self-defence.
‘Russia’s actions pose a threat to Hungary, Europe and the global order, and also pose a serious threat to the Hungarian minority living in Transcarpathia; we therefore support any efforts aimed at initiating negotiations to achieve a sustainable peace and long-term security guarantees,”, the directive states.
The document also contains other recommendations for the Hungarian delegation regarding Budapest’s stance on migration, the conflicts in Gaza, Iran and Lebanon, and certain other issues.
In mid-July, Hungarian Defence Minister Romulusz Rusin-Sandy stated that the country was “closing its doors” to Russia and needed to “restore trust” with its allies. He added that Russian intelligence had “tried to sneak in through the back door”.
The previous Hungarian government, under former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, maintained close ties with Moscow, blocked the European Union’s anti-Russian sanctions, criticised Kyiv and prevented other European countries from adopting aid packages for Ukraine.
