India closes 24 airports due to escalation with Pakistan

In the north of India, 24 airports are temporarily not accepting civilian flights due to the exchange of blows between India and Pakistan, Western media reported.

Indian authorities, in particular, closed airports in the cities of Jodhpur (Rajasthan state), Ludhiana and Amritsar (Punjab state) for passenger flights.

Since Wednesday, India’s largest carriers, notably Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet have cancelled more than 100 flights.

According to some reports, the cessation of civil aviation flights may be lifted on Saturday morning.

For its part, according to the Pakistani publication Dawn, all airports in Pakistan continue to function, possible changes in the schedule of air traffic are the prerogative of airlines.

For instance, UAE-based Emirates airline had earlier suspended its planes over Pakistan until 10 May. Qatar Airways will also not operate flights to and from India and Pakistan for the time being.

At the same time, the Pakistani military reported that it had intercepted six more Indian UAVs over Punjab province.

Relations between India and Pakistan escalated after a group of militants opened fire on people at a crowded tourist spot in northern India on 22 April. Twenty-six people were killed. India blamed the attack on the Pakistani side.

On Wednesday night, India’s military launched airstrikes on infrastructure located in Pakistani territory and Islamabad-controlled areas of Kashmir. The Pakistani armed forces retaliated.
