Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi is travelling to Beijing for talks on 5 May.
“During this visit, he will meet with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi to discuss bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement.
The meeting will take place against the backdrop of the US and Iran remaining deadlocked in talks to end the war.
On May 4, the US Treasury Secretary urged China to step up diplomatic efforts to persuade Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping.
Scott Bessent added that the issue will be raised during the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in mid-May.
A truce has been in place between Iran and the US since early April. But talks between the sides have stalled: they have been unable to agree on any significant issue of the conflict, including Iran’s nuclear programme and free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
