US President Donald Trump told The Atlantic on 1 March that Iran’s new leadership has asked him to resume talks.
“They want to talk, and I agreed, so I’m going to talk to them. They should have done it sooner… They waited too long,” Trump said.
The US president did not respond to a question about when the talks might take place. “Most of these people are gone. Some of the people we dealt with have left because it was a big blow,” the US leader said.
In an interview with CNBC, the US president said the operation in Iran was progressing “ahead of schedule”. “Things are now moving in a very positive direction,” Trump emphasised.
Before the US and Israel went to war against Iran on February 28, representatives from Washington and Tehran held months of talks on Iran’s nuclear programme. The US had insisted that Iran give up developing nuclear weapons.
The Israeli and US strike killed Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other officials of the Iranian regime.
