Iran’s parliament votes in favour of ending cooperation with the IAEA

Iran’s parliament voted on 25 June to suspend cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, Iranian state media reported.

The move still requires final approval from the board authorised to vet the legislation.

“The International Atomic Energy Agency, which refused to even remotely condemn the attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, has auctioned off its international credibility,” Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said.

He said they plan to halt co-operation with the IAEA for now until the “security of nuclear facilities is guaranteed”.

Earlier, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi called for the resumption of nuclear inspections in Iran after a ceasefire between Tehran and Israel.

On 13 June, Israel launched a massive bombing campaign targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, killing many high-ranking commanders – mostly from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps – and nuclear scientists.

Iran responded with missile and drone strikes on Israeli cities.

On 23 June, the US, allied with Israel, launched its own strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordow, Isfahan, and Natang. Iran then attacked a U.S. military base in Qatar, resulting in no casualties. And on 24 June, a U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Iran was announced.

Israel, the United States and other Western countries insist that Iran will not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran maintains that its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes only.
