Israel has struck Iran’s gas infrastructure

On 18 March, the Israeli Air Force struck Iran’s gas infrastructure in the south of the country. This was reported by the Israeli media with reference to officials.

The strikes targeted the South Pars Special Economic Zone in Bushehr Province, where most of Iran’s gas production industry is concentrated, and oil and gas facilities in the nearby port city of Eseluyeh, where numerous oil and gas processing plants are located, Bloomberg reports.

The information was confirmed by Iran’s Fars news agency.

The South Pars field is considered the largest in the world. About 70% of all Iranian gas is produced there. Part of the territory of the field is located in Qatar. The country’s authorities condemned the Israeli strike, saying it could lead to escalation.

Iranian state television said Iran is retaliating by attacking oil and gas infrastructure in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Israel and the US have been striking Iran since 28 February. US President Donald Trump has said the goal of this war is to destroy Iran’s military capabilities and prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. Iran has been striking Israel and countries in the region that co-operate with the US. At the same time, Axios wrote that the US asked Israel not to attack Iran’s energy infrastructure.
