On 6 May, the Israeli military struck the main airport in the Yemeni capital, Sana’a. This was reported by representatives of the Houthis who control Sana’a. Videos of the explosions appeared on social media.
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) subsequently released a statement saying that Israeli warplanes had completely disabled the airport. Prior to this, the Israeli military issued a warning to civilians to leave the airport and surrounding areas.
This is the second Israeli strike on Yemen in two days after tensions rose between Israel and the Houthis.
On the evening of 5 May, the Israeli army reported an air strike on the Yemeni port of Hodeidah and a cement factory in al-Hodeidah province. The targets are located in Houthi-controlled territory.
Israel called the attack a response to a rocket attack on Ben Gurion airport on 4 May that wounded several people.
The Israeli army said it was striking “terrorist infrastructure.”
The Houthis said at least four people were killed in the strikes.
The Iranian-backed Yemeni group has repeatedly fired rockets towards Israel, claiming to be seeking an end to the Israeli operation in the Gaza Strip. Israel, for its part, has struck Yemen several times, including at the airport in Sanaa last December.
