On 20 July, King Charles of the United Kingdom accepted Keir Starmer’s resignation as Prime Minister, the BBC reports.
Before arriving at Buckingham Palace, the British Prime Minister thanked his family and staff, adding that he was leaving Downing Street, the Prime Minister’s official residence, ‘in good spirits’ and ‘with a smile’.
Starmer said he had helped the Labour Party weather a “historic defeat” and secure a convincing victory in 2024, adding that the UK is now a stronger and fairer country. He wished his successor “every success” and said that Andy Burnham had his “full support”.
The new Labour leader, Andy Burnham, is currently in an audience with King Charles and will leave Buckingham Palace as the new Prime Minister of the UK.
On 16 July, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer was on a visit to Ukraine during his final week in office.
